Sometimes advertising designers use Chinese fonts such as “MingLiU” instead of Japanese fonts. But Kanji in Chinese fonts are a little different from those in Japanese fonts. So, an advertisement which uses a Chinese font looks odd for Japanese people. If you want to make natural Japanese ads, you should use Japanese fonts.

A Windows PC may contain Japanese fonts such as “MS Mincho” or “MS Gothic”. “Mincho” means “Serif”, “Gothic” means “Sans serif” in Japan. You have to use them when you develop a website for Japan.

However, they look ungainly in prints; more fine fonts are needed. The fixtures of Japanese fonts are provided by Morisawa&Company Ltd., and DAINIPPON SCREEN MFG. CO., LTD. Morisawa sells a famous serif font family called “Ryumin“, it is well known as a professional font. DAINIPPON SCREEN MFG provides a neat sans-serif font family called “Hiragino“, it is used in Mac OS.

Though they are beautiful fonts, they are a little expensive costing over 20,000JPY. Japanese fonts contain many characters, so they have a lot of development costs. If you want a free and moderate font, IPA ( Information-technology Promotion Agency, Japan) deal out free Japanese fonts. Why don’t you try them?
