The Hakodate foreign cemetery is in the beach area of Hakodate city, near the coast. It is famous because the evening sun looks beautiful there.
The first people buried here in 1854 were two mariners from the fleet of Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry.

Now there are the graveyards of Chinese, Russian, French, and Japanese Christians etc. The shape of the tombstone is different for each country.
For example, the Chinese Memorial Hall maintains the Chinese cemetery and the Hakodate Russian Orthodox Church maintains the Russian and Orthodox Christian cemeteries; each graveyard is maintained by each association. Cemetery visits are free.
Each grave faces the sea; it seems to show the feeling of their nostalgia.
There is the cafe “Morie” on the tip of the foreign cemetery. You can command a beautiful view of the sea from there. (Open 11:00-22:00. Close every Monday.)
Address: 23 Funami-cho, Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan
