The artist 150 years ago inspired cutting edge designers: Ukiyo-e art exhibition “Kuniyoshi: Spectacular Ukiyo-e Imagination”

The huge whale and samurai lie through the entirety of the screen. A man whose face is made of many people….The curious, bold and dynamic composition of these picures were drawn by UTAGAWA Kuniyoshi, Ukiyoe artist in 19th century.
The exhibition “Kuniyoshi: Spectacular Ukiyo-e Imagination” is held to mark the 150th anniversary of his death.

Of course there were many great Ukiyo-e artists but Kuniyoshi won high marks for his talent at drawing, his rich imagination and superior design. He drew many unbelievable scenes, people and animals in a true-to-life way.

Kuniyoshi loved cats and goldfish so he drew many cats and goldfish. His cats and goldfish are very cute and come to life. They express the life of humans with humor.

The exhibition is the largest ever, over 400 drawings and prints are going on display.
Even now, his drawings are fresh and full of surprises. Kuniyosi’s Ukiyo-e will inspire you.
