European Curry was born in Japan?! The various curry styles in Japan.
Japanese curry is one of the most famous and popular dishes in Japan. The original was introduced during the Meiji Era (about 120 years ago) as a British meal. So Japanese curry is also called “European curry” for making a distinction between the Indian and European ones.
However, Japanese curry has developed independently after being introduced into Japan, and now this meal is one of the most popular home cooking and standard menu dishes for school lunches of elementary or junior high schools, too.
Almost all present Japanese homes use curry a roux when they cook curry and there are many kinds of prepackaged curry here. You can eat them simply by putting them in hot water to heat them up.
There are a lot of kinds of original curries in some places in Japan. Special products of those districts are in them. For example, oyster curry(Hiroshima), scallop curry(Aomori), cherry curry(Yamagata), Yezo deer curry(Hokkaido), apple curry(Nagano), and so on. They are sold in each place as prepackaged curry.
Japanese curry is loved as fast food. There are so many curry restaurants(both Japanese and Indian) or coffee shops where you can eat curry. This is the “national meal” for us!
