“Michelin Guide Kyoto & Osaka 2010” is published in Japan on 16th Oct 2009. I think the guidebook is very helpful for Kyoto and Osaka tours.
However, the restaurants in Kyoto refused to be brought in the Michelin guide. Michelin Director Jean-Luc Naret criticized them as being conservative.
Sometimes Kyoto is regarded as an exclusive city. Is it true ?
Actually, most of the restaurants in Kyoto are very small. They keep their restaurants small because they want to keep a serene atmosphere, and give a detailed service for each customer.
They don’t want many customers, and seldom need any advertising. I think that is the reason that Kyoto seems to be an exclusive city.
By contrast, the restaurants in Osaka welcome many customers and advertise well. Kyoto and Osaka are neighboring cities, but they have different styles and cultures. Although, both of people in these cities are friendly and kind to tourists equally.
The restaurants which got 3 stars are all excellent restaurants. Kikunoi Honten(菊乃井 本店) and Hyoutei(瓢亭) are admired by people in Kyoto. They are large, so they can host many customers. Their traditional building and garden are so elegant that you won’t forget them. Their dishes are very great of course, and their prices are also great.
