The beautiful pictures may be art which must be framed and displayed on the wall……
No, they are washcloths called “Tenugui”!
Tenugui is a kind of towel which has been used for a long time in Japan. It is a piece of dyed cotton cloth, about 35cm by 90cm.
The designs of tenugui are very beautiful and dyed with elaborate traditional techniques. Some people love the beautiful designs and collect them.
Eirakuya is a famous tenugui manufacturer which was established about 390 years ago. They make tenugui in several traditional ways, such as “Yuzen” and “Chusen”. Master craftsmen dye these tenugui by hand. The colors of tenugui which were dyed in such ways are too colorfast to wash out. You can use them for a long time without loss of color.
Chusen was developed in the Meiji era. It funnels the pigments over a stencil to sink through the tenugui. Chusen can dye a clear design on each side of a tenugui.
You can use a tenugui in various way. It is flat-woven so it dries fast. The good cotton cloth has a high water absorbtion. The elegant designs are preferred for packages or accessories. Some people use them as wall hangings.
A person who can master tenugui is regarded as sophisticated in Japan. Why don’t you try a tenugui in your daily life?
