The breathtakingly beautiful design……It is completely polished and elegant. The modern patterns in a perfect array make the light fall dramatically.

The very delicate pattern is made of only wood pieces. Experienced craftsmen cut these wood pieces by a tenth of a millimeter, and compose them by hand. The technic is called “Kumiko”, it is a traditional handicraft in Japan. Kumiko is so delicate that you never get tired of looking at it.

There are various Kumiko products, such as sliding doors, lampshades and partitions. Kumiko is adopted by some Japanese restaurants as an elegant interior. Kumiko products have premium accents, they will make your room look like a luxury Japanese hotel.

Tanihata is an established kumiko manufacturer founded 50 years ago. They make kumiko products to order with natural wood. You can choose the design and wood as you like. You should use a gus duster to clean a kumiko.

A Sen lamp is made of about 600 fine bamboo strips. It is made by hand with a very intricate and precise technique.

HOKORE is made of about 1,800 of fine bamboo strips, which is triple that of the Sen lamp. It is also made by hand with great effort. It expresses the power of a blossoming flower bud.

These lamps are simply amazing. All I can say is that they are beautiful. The countless lines of lights are celestial and artistic.

They are made with a traditional technique which called “Suruga Take Sen-suji Zaiku”(駿河竹千筋細工), which has about 400 years of history.

The lamps are made using natural bamboo, so they become a unique elegant light brown in an airy room. You have to brush away the dust gently with a soft brush, not use water or cleanser to clean them. You can enjoy the beauty of these lamps for long time.

This delicate and intricate mosaic design is made only of wood. Not a drop of paint is used….. That’s incredible!

This is a Japanese traditional handicraft, called “Hakone Yosegi Zaiku”. It was developed by ISHIKAWA Jinbe who lived in Hakone town in the Edo era. Since then, Hakone Yosegi Zaiku are the most famous artifacts in Hakone.


Hakone Yosegi Zaiku contains over 10 kinds of wood to utilize their natural colors. There are many kinds of wood in Hakone town, the techniques of Yosegi Zaiku have advanced well.

Hakone Yosegi Zaiku is made by combining many kinds of wooden pieces with a hide glue, this is called “Tanegi”. The tanegi is then planed into thin sheets.

The most popular items are the Japanese puzzle boxes which have complex methods to work out in order to open them. You can’t find out the methods easily so you can hide your treasure in the mysterious boxes.
There are various difficulties of puzzle boxes. Why don’t you challenge the Japanese traditional puzzle?

9. Iro sashi (色挿し)

Coating the cloth with Gojiru again. Then, painting the design with many kinds of brushes. It is the most essential part of Yuzen.

10. Mushi and Nori Otoshi again.

11. Washing and drying, ironing.

Sometimes a Yuzen is decorated with embroidery and gold paint.

In this way, a Yuzen work is a very amazing process. It is reasonable that a Yuzen Kimono made by the traditional way is high price…

What is “Yuzen”? -The basic knowledge of Yuzen dyeing.

The Yuzen Dying method is very involved and contains over 20 steps done in cycles. These steps involve design, copy, drawing, gluing, steaming, soaking, coloring, washing ironing, etc.

It is too difficult to take a quick look at the Yuzen process…..

But, I will explain the whole process of Kyo Yuzen, which has been passed down in Kyoto.
It must be valuable documents of Kyo Yuzen.:-)

In this post, I show you to making the outline.

1.Ao-bana utushi (青花写し)

Tracing a design to the cloth with Ao-bana and a fine brush.

Ao-bana is squeezed dayflowers which is stored instilled into a piece of paper. It disappears when it is washed with water.
Ao-bana is so expensive that it sometimes substituted by a chemical in recent days.

2. Nori oki (糊置き)

Tracing the design with gum glue to resist dyeing the outline.

To trace the design, craftsmen use a small Kakishubu paper tube with a cap. The tube is called “Ito-me (糸目)” The gum glue is set in Ito-me, and squeezed out of the cap.

3.Ao-bana Otoshi (青花落とし)

Washing the cloth with water to remove the Ao-bana. Then, set it up to dry.

4.Fuse Nori (伏糊)

Coating the design with a special glue to resist dyeing the design. The glue is made of glutinous rice, called “Hon-nori (本糊)”. It is a traditional glue in Japan, which has been used for a very long time.

After coating, make a sweep on the cloth to expel any remaining air and sprinkle with powder to dry the glue.

5.Gojiru ji ire (豆汁地入れ)

Gojiru(豆汁) is a mix of Endocladiaceae (a kind of seaweed) and soybean powder soaked in water for 1 hour, strained through a cloth.

Coating both sides of the yuzen cloth with Gojiru dyes the ground color uniformly.

6. Ji zome (地染め)

Dyeing the ground color. Sometimes dyeing several times for the valid color.

7. Mushi (蒸し)

Steam the cloth for 30-40 minutes not to lose the ground color.

8. Nori Otoshi (糊落とし)

Washing off Hon-nori.

Yuzen is a popular Japanese handicraft. It is a kind of dyeing technique, and has been used to make high class Kimono’s for a long time.

Yuzen was invented in the middle of Edo era (around 1700) by MIYAZAKI Yuzen-sai.The term Yuzen Dyeing first appeared in “Gen Shiki Kan”, a book of fashion survey published in 1687.

Yuzen needs skill and perseverance for many fine manipulations. The Yuzen dyeing method contains over 20 steps done in cycles. These steps involve design, copy, drawing, glueing, steaming, soaking, coloring, washing, ironing, etc.

It takes 10 days for Art Works, 1 month for Kimono Sashes and 3 months for Kimono Gowns.

I will explain the whole process of Kyo Yuzen, which has been passed down in Kyoto.
